Residence of the British monarch

The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by William Shakespeare’s playing company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men.
It was destroyed by fire in 1613 after a cannon misfired during a performance of Henry VIII.
A second Globe Theatre was built in 1614, but it was closed by the Puritans in 1642 and later demolished.
In 1997, Shakespeare’s Globe was reconstructed near its original location by Sam Wanamaker, an American actor and director passionate about Shakespeare.
